The pilot: Parvez Dara
The airplanes: G36 Bonanza
The mission: Flying near Salt Lake City at 9,000 feet headed toward Ogden, Utah.
The memory: Cruising toward Ogden on a smooth afternoon, I noticed the Great Salt Lake take on an unexpected shade of purple beneath me. The sun, the salt, and the sky seemed to blend together in a way I’d never seen before.

Colors in the Large Saline Puddle are caused by minerals combined with Algae and the fact that the puddle is divided in half by a railroad causeway that cuts across from east to west and touching the tip of Promontory Point. The Northwest Arm of the puddle is shown in the photo. That arm’s salt content is much, much higher than that in the South Arm. Sometimes, the south end is green-ish blue and the Northwest is red.
The puddle is a fascinating place that is changing rapidly. Utah is growing so fast and water is being sucked into homes and lawns so much that the lake has dropped incredibly in just a few years.
Thanks for a fine photo.
