The mission: Formation with two Weller Rebell V3 aircraft

The memory: My friend Peter and I were on our way back from Münster/Osnabrück International Airport (EDDG) to our nearby 750-foot grass strip. We were treated to the stunning view of the summer sun hanging low on the horizon, bathing the landscape in warm, golden light.

The Weller Rebell V3 is a lightweight, open-cockpit parasol aircraft with a metal frame and fabric covering. Powered by a 33-horsepower four-stroke engine, it belongs to the 120 kg class, similar to the American FAR103 ultralights. The aircraft’s minimalist design and open cockpit made the experience even more immersive, capturing the essence of simple, joyful flight.

Ralph Lelle

Ralph Lelle once dreamed of a career with Lufthansa, but didn't get hired. So, he took a day job and flew Cessnas, Pipers, and similar aircraft in his spare time, earning an instrument rating and working as a flight instructor. Eventually, Lelle retired to a tiny single-seater, the Weller Rebell V3, comparable to the FAR 103 class in the US. As a nod to his ambitions, he gave it a Lufthansa-style paint job and so far has logged 1,500 hours in it.
