After graduating from engineering school with a degree in naval architecture, Steve worked for the Navy but was sidetracked by a marriage to an Army officer who was soon transferred to Hawaii. With trepidation, he went with her. There, he discovered he was eligible to use the Air Force flying club. At historic Wheeler Air Force Base, which had been bombed by the Japanese during the Pearl Harbor attack, he earned his private, instrument, commercial, and multiengine ratings. When his wife’s tour in Hawaii was over, alas, so was their marriage. That led to some Bonanza flying in Washington, but after 9/11 there was a pause in his flight activity until he found airports outside the flight restricted zone on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, where in 2006 he bought a house with his second wife. Medical issues sidelined him again from 2016 to 2019 but BasicMed allowed him back into the cockpit, although so far, he hasn’t tried to regain instrument currency. He now flies a Piper Warrior out of Easton (ESN).
