The view: Doc’s cockpit
The pilot: My son (in his mind, absolutely)
The airplane: B-29 Superfortress
The mission: Drop the atomic bomb
The memory: My family was invited to Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst (KWRI) for family day to get a preview of their annual Power in the Pine Airshow. Unbeknownst to us, Doc was on the ramp and they were prepping for the show. We walked over and the Doc team immediately asked my son, “Do you want a tour of the inside?” My 8-year old son enthusiastically exclaimed “Yes!” without asking me or Mom for permission (we will let it slide this time). The tour was incredible. At the end of it, he asked me, “Dad, when they dropped the atomic bomb, how loud was it?” I replied: “I think we can still hear it today.” On a personal note: When I saw the cockpit I screamed out “Garmin!” and our Doc tour guide said, “Shhhh!” We both laughed. True story.

I read that novel of the operations in the Tinian Island to drop the Little Boy over Hiroshima. Amazing story. Great planning. Great training and top secret.
