I think that the crash videos do make safer pilots. At least from my perspective. I know what not to do. And I cannot believe what some high time pilots, with multiple ratings, are making rudimentary rookie mistakes. Over again. Not getting weather breif, not checking noteam flying aircraft not certified for icing, into known icing conditions, etc. Overweight and trying either a tailwind takeoff or landing. Flying at night into ifr conditions. The list goes on and on, with disastrous results. If one wants to commit suicide, please do so in another way. Not at the controls of an expensive aircraft.
