Freedom Tower

The view: New York City, Hudson River SFRA

The pilot: John Phillips

The airplane: Cessna 172, N2373K from the Reading Aero Club

The mission: I was accompanied by two other pilots (Shawn Borelli & Rick Lauter) from the Reading Aero Club who had yet to fly the Hudson River SFRA. We had three GoPro cameras inside and outside of the plane to record the event.

Editor’s note: This is the latest installment in our weekly series called simply the “Friday Photo.”Each week we’ll share a great photo taken from the cockpit – one that shares the joy, beauty or fun of flying. I live in NYC and I do this flight often; it’s always special. Shortly after I got my private license, I took my brother on this route, right across the harbor and up the Hudson. It was a clear night and everything was lit up beautifully; it seemed like you could put your hand out the window and touch the buildings. This was September 5, 2001, and less than a week later the Twin Towers would be gone. I always look back on that flight, glad that I had one last chance to see them before everything changed.
